There’s something about Jones Point Park family photos in Alexandria VA that feels especially easy. Maybe it’s the water, the paths, the open space, or the fact that there are plenty of places for kids to actually do something instead of being asked to stand still and smile for 45 minutes. And trust me, that’s a huge win!
This family’s session took place on a lovely October morning when the weather was crisp, the light was beautiful, and everything had that unmistakable feeling of fall in Alexandria. The kind of morning that makes you want to take the long way home afterward.
But while October was particularly pretty, Jones Point Park is one of those locations that works well beyond the fall season.

When I’m helping a family choose a location, I don’t just want to find somewhere that looks good in photographs. There are plenty of pretty places around Alexandria. I want to know what feels like you.
Maybe your family spends weekends walking by the water. Or you love Old Town and want your photos to feel connected to the place where you actually spend time together. Are your kids are happiest when they can run, explore, climb, or investigate every stick and rock within a five-mile radius? Those details matter.
Jones Point gives families room to move while still offering a variety of backdrops. There are wooded paths, open areas, the waterfront, and plenty of opportunities for photographs that feel different without having to pile everyone into the car and drive to three separate locations.
For a family with young kids, that can make a pretty big difference. Instead of spending the session trying to manufacture perfect smiles, I can follow what your family is naturally doing. We can walk, talk, explore, play, stop for a minute when someone needs a break, and let the little moments happen in between. Those are often my favorite photographs anyway.
Fall gets a lot of attention for family photos, and I understand why. The crisp air, changing leaves, and softer light are hard to argue with. But you definitely don’t need to wait until October to make Jones Point part of your family photos.
In spring, the landscape feels fresh and bright. Summer brings longer evenings and that relaxed, outdoorsy feeling that comes with being outside until bedtime. And winter has its own quiet, pared-back beauty, especially when the park feels a little more peaceful.
The location changes with the seasons, but the reason I like it stays the same: it gives your family something to do.
And when your children are busy being themselves, you don’t have to worry quite so much about whether everyone is looking at the camera at the exact same moment. Which, as anyone who has ever attempted a family photo with a toddler knows, is a wildly ambitious goal.
One of my favorite parts of planning a family session is finding the connection between where you are photographed and who you are as a family. Your photos don’t have to take place somewhere objectively impressive. They can happen at the park where you spend Saturday mornings, the neighborhood where your children learned to ride their bikes, or the stretch of waterfront you walk together all the time.
Years from now, I want the location to bring something back to you, too. Not just “Oh, that’s where we took our family pictures.” But “We used to come here all the time.” “This was the phase when she insisted on bringing that ridiculous stuffed animal everywhere.” “He was obsessed with throwing rocks into the water.” Those are the details that turn photographs into something more personal than a nice picture of everyone together.
And that’s exactly why I love photographing families around Alexandria. The places you already love become part of the story.

If you’ve been thinking about fall family photos, now is a good time to start planning. Fall dates around Alexandria tend to fill quickly, especially for families hoping for that short window of crisp weather and colorful leaves before we inevitably go from “perfect fall morning” to “why is it suddenly 42 degrees?”
If Jones Point Park feels like a place that fits your family, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels relaxed, personal, and true to this season of your life.
