If you are looking for 10 tips to prepare for a newborn session in Alexandria VA, the goal is not perfection or preparation in the traditional sense.
Those early days at home with a new baby tend to blur together in the most beautiful way. Slow mornings, long afternoons, and the quiet rhythm of getting to know someone brand new.
These sessions are designed to meet you exactly where you are, whether you’re in a light-filled home in Old Town Alexandria, a cozy space in Del Ray, or somewhere in between feedings and figuring out how time is already moving so quickly.
A little thoughtful preparation can help your session feel calm, natural, and truly reflective of this season.
Here are 10 simple tips to help you prepare.
There’s no need for a deep clean or a full reset.
Most in-home newborn sessions in Alexandria VA take place in just one or two areas with beautiful natural light, often the nursery, your bedroom, or a living room with large windows. Open all of your blinds and curtains before I arrive to let the most natural light in.
Clearing a few surfaces is more than enough. Your home already tells your story.
Your outfits can be as dressy or as relaxed as you’d like.
The most important thing is comfort, especially for postpartum bodies. Soft fabrics, flowy silhouettes, and pieces you feel good in will always photograph beautifully.
One small tip: try to avoid bold colors that might cast onto baby’s skin when you’re holding them. Soft, neutral tones tend to keep everything looking natural and timeless.
A simple onesie, swaddle, or soft neutral outfit is perfect.
There’s no need for multiple outfit changes. In fact, too many transitions usually don’t make for a happy baby, so I typically recommend just one.
I also have a small collection of simple, neutral newborn pieces you’re always welcome to borrow.
And in between, we’ll often capture baby in just a diaper. Leaving hands and feet free allows for those tiny detail images of fingers and toes.
Newborns love warmth.
Setting your home slightly warmer than usual helps baby stay sleepy and content throughout the session.
Yes, you might be a little warm. It won’t last forever.
A full baby is usually a relaxed baby.
Feeding just before your session starts can help ease into a calm rhythm. And if baby needs to eat again, we’ll pause and restart once you’re all ready.
There’s no rush and nowhere else to be.
Feeding breaks, diaper changes, and time spent soothing your baby are all part of the session.
This is especially true for in-home newborn photography in Alexandria VA, where the pace is intentionally slower and more flexible.
Some of the most meaningful images happen in these in-between moments. And all of my newborn sessions have built in time for exactly this reason.
If you have a toddler, you already know the plan is… flexible.
They don’t need to sit still or smile on cue. Movement, play, and quick bursts of connection often create the most genuine moments.
If they need space away from the baby, that’s okay, too. We’ll focus just on the baby and then bring them back in when they feel ready.
A favorite swaddle, a well-loved blanket, or a special book can add a personal layer to your session.
Homes throughout Alexandria already bring so much character. A few intentional details are all you need.
For example, a recent client brought out a blanket from her own babyhood. We gently laid her baby on top, and it became one of those quietly meaningful moments that you can feel just by looking at it.
There’s no rushing through a newborn session.
There’s time to sit, hold your baby, and just be in it. Time to stare at them a little longer than usual. Time for a sip of coffee, or to settle into something simple as a family.
If the weather allows, we can even step outside for a few photos in your yard for a different feel.
Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the entire time. Your toddler doesn’t need to cooperate perfectly. Your home doesn’t need to look a certain way.
What matters is how this season feels.
The quiet moments. The small movements. The way your family settles into one another during these early days at home in Alexandria VA.
That’s what your photos will hold onto.

Newborn sessions are meant to feel like a pause. A chance to slow down and be present in a season that moves quickly.
