If you’re wondering when to book maternity photos in Northern Virginia, you are definitely not alone. Pregnancy somehow feels both incredibly long and wildly fast. One minute you are staring at a positive test, the next you are in your third trimester wondering how time moved so quickly. Planning maternity photos during pregnancy can feel like just another thing on the list, but it can also be a meaningful pause before everything changes.
If you are thinking about maternity photos, the short answer is yes, now is a great time to start planning. The longer answer is that timing matters, flexibility matters even more, and how you feel matters most.

Most maternity sessions are photographed between 28 and 34 weeks. This window is popular for a reason. Your belly is beautifully round, you still have some energy left, and you’re usually not yet in the “please do not ask me to leave the couch” phase.
That said, pregnancy is not one size fits all. Some people feel amazing earlier and want photos closer to 26 or 27 weeks. Others feel their best a bit later and schedule closer to 35 or even 36 weeks. There is no gold star for following the rules perfectly. The best timing is when you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.
This is the sweet spot for many reasons, especially here in Northern Virginia where seasons matter.
It also gives enough breathing room if weather needs to be adjusted or life happens, because life always does.
Absolutely. Earlier sessions can feel softer and more understated, especially if this is your first pregnancy or you prefer a subtler look. Later sessions can feel powerful, emotional, and deeply connected to the reality that your baby will be here very soon.
The key thing to remember is that comfort matters more than any timeline on the internet. If you are uncomfortable, tired, or stressed, it will show. If you feel calm, supported, and cared for, that will show too.
Even if your session will not take place for a few months, it is a good idea to reach out during your early second trimester. This allows time to:
Northern Virginia maternity photographers tend to book up, especially for spring and fall, so earlier is always safer than later.
If you’re already thinking ahead, this is also a great time to plan both maternity and newborn photos together. Many families choose to book them at the same time so everything is handled before baby arrives. It means one less thing on your mental list later and a smoother transition into those early newborn days. For families who want ongoing documentation, the membership option can be an especially easy way to plan ahead without having to start from scratch each time. You can learn more about that here.
This comes up all the time, and it is worth saying out loud. You do not need to feel glowing, magical, or goddess-like every day to deserve photos that feel meaningful. Some days pregnancy feels beautiful. Some days it feels like survival mode with snacks.
A good maternity session is not about forcing a vibe. It is about creating space where you can show up exactly as you are. Rest breaks, gentle movement, and a relaxed pace are all part of the experience.
Timing your maternity photos can also depend on the season you are hoping for.
If you have a season you love, that can help guide when you schedule, but again, your comfort always comes first.

If you are wondering whether it is too early or too late, the answer is usually neither. The right time is when you feel ready and supported. A general guideline can be helpful, but your body and your experience lead the way.
