A Cozy Guide for Families in Northern Virginia and the DC Area
The holiday season always seems to bring a special kind of magic to the Northern Virginia and DC area. Twinkle lights fill Old Town, families wander through festive markets, and little ones feel the excitement in every small moment. With so many places to explore in Northern Virginia, it can be easy to forget that the most memorable moments often happen right inside your home. Creating meaningful holiday traditions for families helps turn everyday moments into lasting memories that your children will treasure for years to come.
This guide gathers simple ideas that help families slow down, connect and create memories that last long after the season ends. These traditions are perfect for young children and work beautifully whether you are celebrating in Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington or anywhere across the DC region.

Choose one evening that becomes “Ornament Night” for your family. Start by making simple salt dough ornaments together—kids can shape stars, hearts, or their favorite holiday symbols. Once baked and decorated, hang them on the tree.
A blanket, the warm lights of the tree, some candles and dinner together on the floor makes an ordinary weeknight feel magical. This tradition is easy, cozy and something kids look forward to as soon as the tree goes up.
Gather sleeping bags or a mattress and spend the night next to the tree. Read holiday stories, sip cocoa and enjoy the soft glow. This one often becomes a yearly request.
Bundle everyone in pajamas, grab blankets and hot cocoa, and drive through your favorite neighborhoods in Alexandria or Arlington to find the brightest lights. Kids can give each house a score or take turns choosing the next street. Check out this list of decorated homes in the area!
Fill a basket with books or small activity cards. Each day leading up to Christmas, let your child choose one. Activities can include visiting Santa in DC, watching a holiday movie, baking cookies, reading a seasonal book or doing something creative together.
Instead of a mischievous elf, create one that encourages kindness. Each morning it brings a small suggestion like writing a card for a neighbor or helping set the table. It’s a sweet way to weave generosity into the season.
Spend a day doing small acts of service as a family. Donate food to a local pantry, drop off toys for a holiday drive or leave treats for delivery drivers. One of my favorite local non-profit organizations is Be the Good, where kids can help pack Boost Bags or choose items to include, making the experience hands-on and meaningful. This tradition helps little ones learn the joy of helping others in the community.
Write letters that will be opened next year. Kids can share their favorite memories, what they are excited for and the little moments that made the season special. It becomes a time capsule for your family.
Turn everyday outings into a festive adventure. While running errands, walking around the neighborhood, or driving to school, give kids clues to spot holiday decorations, signs, or little surprises along the way. This adds a playful twist to ordinary routines and makes even quick trips feel magical.
Write your children a note that celebrates who they are right now: their personality, humor, kindness, quirks, and the little things that make them unique. Include favorite memories from the year, things that made you laugh, milestones they’ve reached, or moments that warmed your heart. You can also add hopes and wishes for the coming year. These letters become treasured keepsakes your children can revisit as they grow, offering a tangible reminder of love, joy, and the magic of this season.
If your family loves getting out into the community, the DC region is full of festive activities. Holiday markets, light displays, cozy cafés and family-friendly events offer endless opportunities to make the season bright. You can pair these bigger outings with calm at-home traditions to create a balanced and meaningful December.
