Spring in the DC area feels beautiful and magical, and as a family and maternity photographer, I can’t get enough of the vibrant blossoms that transform our parks and gardens into storybook backdrops. 1. Saucer Magnolias

These early bloomers are a sure sign that spring is on its way. With their large, pink-and-white petals, saucer magnolias create a dreamy, romantic setting. In full sun, or on a cloudy day, these are favorites among photographers for a reason! They can come and go rather quickly, so flexibility while planning a session with magnolias is important.

• Best Time to See Them: Late February to mid-March
• Favorite Spots: Enid A. Haupt Garden (Smithsonian Castle), Rawlins Park, and the U.S. National Arboretum

2. Cherry Blossoms (Yoshino, Kwanzan, Weeping)

Nothing says DC spring like cherry blossoms. The delicate, soft pink Yoshino blossoms peak first, followed by the fluffy, vibrant Kwanzan and the graceful weeping varieties. Kwanzan cherry blossoms are my person favorite and I hold mini sessions on Hains Point every year!

• Best Time to See Them: Yoshino (late March), Kwanzan and Weeping (mid to late April)
• Favorite Spots: Tidal Basin (iconic!), Hains Point, and Dumbarton Oaks for a quieter, more intimate feel

3. Wisteria

Wisteria’s cascading purple blooms add an enchanting, whimsical vibe to any session. Their trailing clusters look like something straight out of a fairytale.

• Best Time to See Them: Late April to early May
• Favorite Spots: Old Town, Alexandria, Dumbarton Oaks, U.S. National Arboretum, and the wisteria pergolas at Meridian Hill Park

4. Camellias

Often overlooked, camellias are spring gems with lush, rose-like blooms in shades of pink, red, and white. Their glossy green leaves provide the perfect contrast. I am obsessed with these and the way they fall on he cobblestone sidewalks in Alexandria. It’s so romantic and would be the perfect setting for a maternity session!

• Favorite Spots: Old Town Alexandria, U.S. National Arboretum, and the Bishop’s Garden at the National Cathedral

5. Roses

As spring starts to transition into summer, roses begin their stunning display. Their bold colors and classic beauty make them an elegant backdrop.

• Best Time to See Them: Mid-May through June
• Favorite Spots: Bon Air Memorial Rose Garden (Arlington) and the Bishop’s Garden at the National Cathedral
