As a photographer specializing in maternity, newborn, and family portraits in Alexandria, Virginia, I take great pride in capturing and preserving your family's legacy. This blog serves as a space where I'll share memories from recent sessions, a little about myself, and helpful guides for my clients.
Cherry blossom season in Washington, DC is magical. The city bursts into beautiful shades of pink and white. Visitors arrive from all over to see the famous and stunning display of cherry trees around the Tidal Basin. The cherry trees that line the Tidal Basin are known as Yoshino cherry trees. These trees have beautifully delicate, light pink blossoms. Undoubtedly, they are popular for good reason.
Another type, and my personal favorite, is the Kwanzan cherry blossoms. These blossoms feature double-layered, pink flowers that have a full, lush appearance. The clusters of blossoms create a stunning visual impact. Unlike the Yoshino variety, Kwanzan’s are a bit more showy and bold. They are scattered throughout the city and notably, in a grove at Hains Point.
While both types of cherry blossoms are beautiful, there’s just something about the Kwanzan blossoms that I love. Maybe it’s a nostalgic factor, as I had one in my backyard growing up. As soon as the petals begin to fall to the ground, they create a pink layer on the grass that is so pretty. As a result, they make a beautiful backdrop for family photos.
A few reasons a mini session in the grove of Kwanzan cherry blossoms is perfect for you
First, Kwanzan cherry trees reach their peak bloom a few weeks after the Yoshino trees do around the Tidal Basin. By this time, the large crowds are mostly gone. Fewer crowds = less stress for you and your family. The next benefit is the parking! The park features a beautiful grove of Kwanzan cherry blossoms *and* there’s free parking. Again, one less thing you need to think about for your session. Lastly, there’s a playground and bathrooms nearby. An additional bonus: lots of green space to throw a blanket down and have a picnic after your session!
